Educational and Extracurricular Activities

CLUBS

ART CLUB - Grades 5-8.  Meets monthly.  Students explore and learn basic drawing and painting skills.

CHESS CLUB – Grades 3-8.  Meets 1-2 times per month, November-May.

COMPUTER CLUB - Grade 6.  Meets monthly.  Presentation and hands-on activities to enhance the understanding and use of technologies.
DRAMA CLUB – Grades 3-5.  Meets monthly, September-February.  Students play theater games and attend a field trip to a theater production.

FRENCH CLUB - Grade 6.  Meets monthly.
SKI CLUB– Grades 4-8.  Weekly skiing on Fridays after school during ski season.

SPANISH CLUB - Grade 6.  Meets monthly.

SPEED STACKS - All grades.  Meets twice a month to stack cups (used to advance gross motor skills).

ACADEMIC CHALLENGE - Grades K-8.

GEOGRAPHY BEE – Grades 5-8.

MATH CONTESTS AND OTHER MATH COMPETITIONS - Grades 5-8.

ORATORY CONTESTS – Grades 6-8. 

READER'S DIGEST WORD POWER CHALLENGE - Grades 4-8.

SCIENCE FAIR - Grades 7-8.  Students compete in local, district and regional science fairs.

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD - Grades 7-8.

SPELLING BEE – Grades 5-8.


MUSIC

INSTRUMENTAL BAND PROGRAM – Grades 5-8. Meets weekly before school, September - May.

MUSICAL THEATER – Grades 7-8. Spring performance opportunities for students interested in musical theater.  Cast selected by audition.

SCHOOL CHOIR – Grades 3-8. Rehearsal Monday & Tuesday before school, for students interested in participating in school liturgies.

MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS – Grades 8.

SCOUTING – Girls, grades K-8.  Boys, grades 1-8.

YEARBOOK – Grade 8.  Students prepare yearbook for production.


READING/WRITING

ENGLISH FESTIVAL - Grades 7-8.  Students read selected novels and compete in various activities at Youngstown State University.

JUNIOR GREAT BOOKS – Grades 6-8.  Meets 3 times each semester.  This program strengthens reading comprehension and promotes analytical and interpretive skills.
POWER OF THE PEN – Grades 7-8.  Meets weekly.  Statewide creative writing competition.  Students prepare for district competition in January and regional tournament in March.
READERS' THEATRE - Grade 6.  Meets weekly September - March.  An interpretive oral reading activity.

YOUNG AUTHORS – Grades 3-6.  Meeting 4 times in spring.  This program enables students to create and write their own book.



RELIGIOUS/SERVICE

ALTAR SERVERS – Grades 6-8.  Includes school and parish.
JUNIOR AMBASSADORS FOR LIFE – Grade 8.  This program strengthens religious beliefs through adult issues.

MIME OF THE PASSION - Grade 8.

SAFETY PATROL – Grade 6.

STUDENT COUNCIL– Grades 3-8.  Meets monthly.  Representatives elected by students
in homeroom to represent school.
