As a Better Together school, at St. Hilary School, we strive to help all learners grow and reach their academic potential. This includes providing intervention and support to struggling students and enrichment for students working above grade level. Our RTI (Response to Intervention) process helps students who are struggling academically, socially, and behaviorally by parents and staff collaboratively creating an action plan based on a research-based intervention to help improve an area of weakness. Our MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing, which is administered to students in grades K-8 three times per year, allows the staff to provide interventions in the classroom for any area of weakness that a student exhibits. Modifications and accommodations are available in the classroom for students who need an adjustment to the regular curriculum in order to succeed. Customized enrichment can be implemented in the classroom where needed, and students may also qualify for our pull-out enrichment learning program. In order to meet the needs of a range of students, St. Hilary School has numerous tutors, a speech language teacher, a behavioral specialist, an occupational therapist, a social worker, a guidance counselor, a school psychologist, a director of social emotional wellness, and professionals who provide enrichment opportunities for students in the arts, critical thinking, science, technology, math, and more.
Our K-3 teachers and tutors are trained in Orton-Gillingham, a multi sensory approach to teaching phonemic awareness, and we have tutors trained in Lucy Calkins' Leveled Literacy Instruction program. We also have math tutors, licensed intervention specialists, a speech therapist, an occupational therapist, and an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) specialist.
Customized enrichment can be provided within the classroom for students excelling in various subject areas. To further address the needs of students who would benefit from additional challenge in their educational experience, we offer a Think Tank program, which is a pull-out program designed to enrich the curriculum for students who score 130 or above on the Cognitive Abilities Test. Additionally, Kindergarteners, first and second grade students participate in an enrichment arts program that takes visual art, literature and music to the next level, encouraging imagination and artistic creation.
